Centre for Civic Education Pakistan has welcomed the passage of Right of Access to Information Act, 2017 after due parliamentary processes, debate and discussion. ‘We consider it as a historic gift to the citizens of Pakistan by the Parliament of Pakistan’ said Hafsa Zafar, Executive Director of the Centre.

As a first historic milestone in 2010, the 18th Constitutional Amendment acknowledged citizen’s Right to Information by incorporating Article 19-A in the Chapter of Fundamental Rights that says, ‘Every citizen shall have the right to have access to information in all matters of public importance subject to regulation and reasonable restrictions imposed by law.’

The enactment of RTI Act, 2017 is an outcome of relentless efforts of the civil society spread over 27 years, said Hafsa Zafar.
